Neurofeedback is among the therapies recommended for children diagnosed ADHD. It is also known as brain core therapy. The fact that neurofeedback can be used quite successfully for children in other areas of self-regulation (pain management, anxiety, etc) increases its appeal as a form of therapy.

Neurofeedback therapy is performed after the doctor does an assessment of the child’s physical and mental status, brain disorders, health background and other pertinent information needed to ensure the proper neurofeedback therapy.

How Neurotherapy Works

Neurofeedback treatment involves placing electrodes or sensors on a child’s head to monitor brain activity. They are asked to change the aspects of a video game (for example “making the sun set with your mind”), which happens when their brainwaves are of a desired frequency. The theory behind neurofeedback is that learning to do this increases a child’s arousal levels, helps them focus and results in reductions in hyperactive-impulsive behaviors. Most children see a reduction of their ADHD symptoms in 6-8 weeks.

The sensors are safe and do not send electricity to the child’s head or brain. The procedure is painless and does not leave any physical marks.

Benefits of Neurofeedback in Children with ADHD

Neurofeedback is non-invasive. It has also been reported safe by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Parents of children who have received neurofeedback have also reported that long after neurofeedback therapy is completed, the child is still able to manipulate their brain functions in response to various disorders in addition to ADHD:

  • Sleep disorders
  • Anxiety
  • Headaches/migraines
  • Memory
  • Social Involvement
  • Attention Difficulties
  • Sensory Integration
  • Auditory Processing
  • Reading/Learning Difficulties
  • Dyslexia
  • Self Esteem/Depression
  • Alertness, Focus, Fatigue
  • Autism
  • Developmental Delay

Another very important benefit of neurofeedback therapy for children is the reduction or elimination of prescription drugs for ADHD or other brain disorders. Many ADHD patients are given prescription that can affect a child’s development. The reduction or elimination drugs can be highly beneficial to young children who are in their crucial physical and mental developmental stages.

If you are a parent of a child suffering from ADHD, neurofeedback may be a good option based on its effectiveness and its safety. Neurofeedback has been used for over 40 years and the Federal Drug and Food Administration (FDA) has acknowledged the safety of neurofeedback therapy.
